Simon Wessely Research & Related Quotes

Ah, I remember now...(I hope we mean the same :) ) I checked the thread, and it was about "undeserving patients", something which could refer to Sharpe although I think Wessely might have said something like that, too. There are some quotes circulating, and I was trying to find the originals...

Has anybody a source for that quote about chronic fatigue and secondary gains and sick role? I simply can't find it.

NICE guideline review: A list of appointees to the ME/CFS Guideline Committee has now been published

I question in the meanwhile how many doctors actually know what burning muscles feel like. I came across a healthy person who never used her muscles until they burned, obviously, because she asked what it feels like. I assume that's not uncommon. So how are they supposed to understand when you...

    Survey on stigma around ME

That was exactly the background of my question. I would like to know what the project is about.

A European Research Agenda for Somatic Symptom Disorders, Bodily Distress Disorders, and Functional Disorders, 2018, van der Feltz-Cornelis et al

My personal impression is this is often a farce. Maybe people who have a private health insurance will be treated properly. There were some anecdotes about Marburg which didn't sound too moving. Concerning the other centers: I am not sure what to make of them. Tübingen insists on psychological...

Parkinsons' Disease, biomarkers, talking points related to ME and psychosomatic diagnoses

Hm, seems Gotthard Booth wasn't a no-name: https://www.nytimes.com/1975/11/17/archives/drgotthard-booth.html He's written several books, too. But that doesn't mean he had broad influence. @Samuel, do you know better?

    Guardian 'diabetes is biopsychosocial'

This is all very troubling. There really seems to be put quite an effort into redefining any disease as "biopsychosocial". This is returning to the past. I wonder if the BPS believers are aware of the fact that their ideas are old. And if they're aware, the question is: What does that say us?

Parkinsons' Disease, biomarkers, talking points related to ME and psychosomatic diagnoses

Following @Samuel's post, you can put Parkinson's on your list of diseases that were viewed as psychosomatic in the past, it seems.

Parkinsons' Disease, biomarkers, talking points related to ME and psychosomatic diagnoses

Actually, I was surprised to find that the idea of Eugenics came from Francis Galton from the UK and was very popular in the US before it came to Germany. It makes sense that Germany was not an enclave of ideologies about sick and disabled people, but it shows very clearly what these ideologies...

Parkinsons' Disease, biomarkers, talking points related to ME and psychosomatic diagnoses

Thank you @MSEsperanza. My impression was after skimming the Wikipedia pages on Neurology and Psychiatry that they seem to have developed independently, which intuitively doesn't make sense. @Samuel, great find!

Blog: Lloyd's Fatigue Clinic study asks “are women with CFS ovary-reacting?”

Who can participate: Wouldn't regular menstrual cycles indicate normal hormone levels? What's the sense of that? Or is it just to show that women with CFS are goats that react too sensitive to their hormones? Grrr.

Blog: Lloyd's Fatigue Clinic study asks “are women with CFS ovary-reacting?”

Incredible. Dumbness is infinite indeed. At the same time, these developments are disturbing.
