Oh my god! :jawdrop:
Unfortunately, it's not just British, and I think I don't exaggerate if I say the situation in Germany (or Denmark or Sweden) is worse than in UK, because here ME doesn't get diagnosed at all. The BPS propaganda was that successful that, instead, you are diagnosed with...
Yes, that was especially impressive and vivid. It's one thing to read about it, it's another to experience and thus understand the problem.
There's also another problem with questionnaires, and that's that the questions and answers can be interpreted, and thus also "falsey" interpreted (i.e...
There were healthy people present at the protest in New York City, and at MillionsMissing events. I don't see anything wrong in getting help from other people.
Henningsen - the Wessely-disciple in Germany - said in a paper (Neurasthenie und chronic fatigue syndrome I guess) that activism* is a proof that CFS is a neurotic disorder.
(*More precisely, to deny the psychological nature of CFS and to insist it was organic was a proof it is neurotic. It has...
It's a great way for staying clear from any legal problems. In this case, if it had turned out it had been gas which had leaked due to technical problems that could have been avoided, the hospital might have had to pay the victims.
@chrisb the parallels to Neurasthenia and hysteria are striking, including the sociopolitical surroundings of the time. For instance, Baur et al. lectured about their eugenics long before their book was published in 1921. The interest wasn't at its peak yet, but when it was Lehmann's saw a great...
I find this thread very interesting, informative and helpful in understanding the Wessely et al.-history behind ME. It is very detailed. I agree with @Trish Keith Geraghty might be interested or know more.
It's actually Wessely et al. who started that "all in the mind" meme by saying ME is not a real disease, just the belief to have an illness called ME; that it's real vs. unreal. This wasn't said just once, this was repeated all over their publications and interviews and lectures.
Edit:
Well...
After reading too many of their shit papers I am absolutely sure they fear the "informed citizen", and they want "the old good times" where the doctor was God and you the obedient servant. It's a well-known means in dictatorships: to withhold information, e.g. via the internet or meetings (like...
Haha, they even have psychasthenia, I can't believe it! Baur-Fischer-Lenz (a well-known book about eugenics from 1921) had the opinion, Neurasthenia would be better described by psychasthenia (p. 552). But "neurasthenia is more gentle, more polite, therefore it is more used."
(I'm sorry for...
Well, that is quite interesting. Thanks @Andy. I would also be interested in the comparison of poor man's tilt table test with tilt table test (or does that exist?).
What you say is correct as far as I know:
Beard described a symptom complex and called it Neurasthenia. First, he viewed that as neurological. I don't know the specifics, but in the coming years it was claimed to be psychiatric. At the beginning its reputation was good, and it was mainly used...
Yes. By far, there isn't as much judicial regulation in psychiatries. If I had to choose I would choose prison. I wouldn't want a lawyer to plead "not guilty due to insaneness".
Nah. Money money above all! Economy is more important than environment or people, lest alone children. Just think...
About secondary gain (it's about MUS, but it's known - and can be deduced from other publications - that ME is a subset of MUS is FSS is somatoform disorder is conversion disorder is hysteria (it's even in the correct time order from new to old :D)):
