New Statesman article: “Society is ableist”: Alice Hattrick on gender, chronic illness and long Covid

Has anyone read the book? It looks interesting. Unfortunately no audio version as of yet.

(Daily Telegraph) “How I became a target for the ME militants” by Dr Michael Fitzpatrick

I really don't understand why all of these people come out of the Revolutionary Communist Party/Living Marxism. What is the ideological connection? I seems if you go so far to the left you can end up entering the far right. The extremists on either side are obsessed with 'freedom' over...

Paul Garner on Long Covid and ME/CFS - BMJ articles and other media.

In my opinion, Paul Garner's behaviour, whilst understandable on a personal level (scary illness in the midst of a pandemic could provoke all sorts of responses), is not appropriate on a professional level. I think our criticisms of him should stick to the science and I actually think this is...

United Kingdom: Optimum Health Clinic (Alex Howard)

Thanks. I think I went into it slightly less vulnerable than others. I had already had quite a bit of counselling which was kind and useful and so I felt that I knew myself and my boundaries as well as what good practice looks like and what makes a safe therapeutic relationship. I was also quite...

GAS (Goal Attainment Scaling in Rehabilitation), GAS-light, and gaslighting.

I think the use of the term GAS-light is darkly ironic given the way that it's author behaves towards patients but personally I think it is unlikely that it was knowingly used.

GAS (Goal Attainment Scaling in Rehabilitation), GAS-light, and gaslighting.

Gaslighting is one 'technique' used by abusers to establish control. Gaslighting is specifically denying the victim's reality in order to make them feel like they are going mad and so start to doubt themselves and their own judgements. It includes making other people think that the victim's...

Dane Cook's analysis of exercise data of the CDC's MCAM study

Well this is interesting. Just timed myself out of interest and I do about 6 deep breaths per minute (slightly under actually).

    Guardian Article on NICE pause

I actually think this is a big improvement on previous guardian articles. Not perfect but also not terrible and perhaps moving in the right direction.

    Guardian Article on NICE pause

For some articles, not all. Not on this one.

A map of metabolic phenotypes in patients with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome, 2021, Fluge, Mella et al

A hypothesis that makes sense to a non scientist like me and resonates with my own experiences. Any idea what the 'lack of physical activity' bit in the last line of the article above means? Does it mean that it could be the lack of physical activity in severe patients which could provoke the...

    Home Improvements

Thanks all! I'll call around different decorators and ask and if that fails perhaps it'll have to be a handyman, thinking about it, there's probably enough other jobs that need doing around the house to make that worth while if necessary. I find organizing this kind of thing so overwhelming, I...

    Home Improvements

I need to get a room in my house painted. I'm going to have to pay somebody to do it. Obviously I can't move the furniture myself first in preparation and I don't have anyone else who can do it for me. I've been told painter/decorators don't move furniture. Any ideas?

Request for patients' stories harmed by GET

I'm a bit worried about this. What if giving NICE details of people who have been severely harmed allows them to change the guidance so that it sort of says 'don't do GET in the way that was done to these people' (but do it nice and gently!) I think we need to focus on the fact that there is no...

United Kingdom: Optimum Health Clinic (Alex Howard)

@Parsnip yes, the Optimum Health course includes the lightening process (they don't call it that but it's the same) as well as other things like meditation and diet. I did it years ago, it was terrible.

    NICE ME/CFS guideline - draft published for consultation - 10th November 2020

Absolutely. Specific criticism of CBT/GET including sharing personal stories of the harm it has done is definitely most effective. Our message should be 'CBT/GET is harmful' rather than 'ME is a physical disease'.

    NICE ME/CFS guideline - draft published for consultation - 10th November 2020

There's a comment in the comment section of this article that says,: "Genuine question, not an opinion. In the abscence of any consistent physiological cause of ME, as opposed to the undoubted physiological affects, why are ME sufferers so adamant that there is not a mental illness aspect to...
