UK: Disability benefits (UC, ESA and PIP) - news and updates 2023 (including government plans to scrap the work capability assessment)

I was under the impression that the sick note hadn't existed for a long long time. That they were replaced by fit notes. Many, many years ago - shortly after I got my last sick note I think, that's possibly around the year 2000. You'd think that Ministers, MPs, commentators, journalists...

New Study: Gargling with Salt Water May Help Prevent Covid Hospitalization

Isn't gargling with salty water otherwise known, traditionally, as 'drowning'.

Opinions on payments to participants in research

Dunno...it took 3 trips out specifically to post the spit sample back before I actually achieved it. The post box is inside the main local supermarket so thos 3 trips out cost me £34 (in total) that wouldn't have been spent then apart from the trips. The other closest post box in this area...

Magicians Defy Creative Mental Health Trends

If magicians have such good mental health what's with the whole mutilation of, usually young, females. Chopping them in half, head removal, insertion of generally multiple sharp objects, throwing sharp objects to at them, etc... I mean....these, usually, guys definitely seem a bit unbalanced...

Guardian: Private UK health data donated for medical research shared with insurance companies (UK Biobank)

Are insurance companies considered scientists? If not then how is it relevant that scientists must agree to something before receiving data? All adoptees must agree to treat any kittens that we supply well, and not to use them for cooking with...is kind of null and void if the kittens are...

Increased risk of chronic fatigue syndrome following infection: a 17-year population-based cohort study, 2023, Chang et al

Were they also amazed to find that people given a diagnostic code for broken bones in the leg were found to have broken legs?

    The Chrysalis Effect

A lot of uses of the meaningless (in this context) word 'recovery'.

Return-to-work with long COVID: An Episodic Disability and Total Worker Health® analysis, 2023, Stelson et al.

But....at the beginning of the day....why would an employer hirw someone they thought couldn't be trusted. And if they can be trusted then why assume they are lying about their health.

Trial Report Amitriptyline at Low-Dose and Titrated for Irritable Bowel Syndrome...a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 3 trial, 2023, Ford

Wouldn't the finding that an antidepressant had no effect on depression call the competency of everyone who's prescribed it, to treat depression, since the year dot, into question?

    Crowdfunded awareness campaigns including billboards

Are billboards even a thing any more? I haven't seen one in use in years, and I used to live across the road from 2 of them. All they said for years was 'to advertise here call.....'

Yeast Beta-Glucan Supplementation with Multivitamins Attenuates Cognitive Impairments in [ME/CFS], 2023, Lacasa et al

It's basically marketing by BigOat to try and sell more porridge oats ;)

If you had to guess ME/CFS cause, what'd you say?

IMO it's both an energy and a power limitation i.e. in the distant past, when I had more energy, I could feel that I had enough energy to, say, walk faster, I just couldn't utilise it, it was like my feet, ankles and lower legs were 'damaged' and were operating as well as they could, which was...

Germany's Kliniken Schmieder group 2022 report on Long Covid research

Pretty sure research found, thousands of years ago, that positive encouragement, using whips etc, could help people fight fatigue and allow people to perform better than they thought they could.

Has science compared ME/CFS with "normal" post-viral fatigue?

These already exist, in the form of 'flu' symptom reducers, and many other OTC medicines. In that they do nothing to fight the flu, in fact they reduce the symptoms of the immune system fighting it, AFAIK by interfering with aspects of the immune response, and possibly therefore prolong it ;)

Has science compared ME/CFS with "normal" post-viral fatigue?

Given that, until 2 years after covid hit, practically everyone in medicine, government, the media, and virtually every grouping apart from 'us' has point-blank denied that any disease does anything but kill people or is recovered from I would imagine the research base is rather small. The...

Article: This is the largest map of the human brain ever made

But....they don't day how large this map is. Given practically all things related to size are in Wales's, Europe's, Brazil's or more recently giraffes, just how big is this largest map of the brain?

Closed UK: DecodeME updates, was recruitment thread.

numbers seemed confusing and contradictory. I can only assume that different graphics used data from different dates. Started off saying they had asked 20500 people for dna, then it (on a later graphic) said they had asked 20000, but only sent out 19,000 spit kits. So far.....it appears they...
