Another one I made earlier : https://www.healthrising.org/blog/2013/07/28/japanese-sensory-gating-stud-reveals-profound-cognitive-deficits-present-in-chronic-fatigue-syndrome/
Here's one I made earlier (as they say) : https://www.healthrising.org/blog/2013/01/17/not-fatigue-after-all-new-model-suggests-other-symptoms-explain-chronic-fatigue-syndrome-mecfs-better/
Yep - I've long thought that some sort of impaired sensory filtering may be a major factor and attenuation rather than complete filtering of 'irrelevant' stimuli makes sense.
ETA - This just reminded me of another interesting phenomenon I've just noticed recently. In the hot weather we keep a...
I may have give the impression that it was a case of one or the other or that all it took was to concentrate and everything was OK - that isn't the case. By that stage my legs are stiff heavy and aching and despite my best efforts (of concentration) I'll eventually be unable to walk at all and...
Sorry for butting in but do you think you could carry on a conversation while learning to drive (or any other skill that becomes second nature).
When I have one of my regular 'mini strokes' I have the distinct impression of having forgotten how to walk in the sense that every movement seems to...
For what it's worth, inspired by this discussion, I've posted a speculative model for PEM and the 2 day CPET results based on previous musings and discussion on another forum.

More on the dopamine imbalance hypothesis of fatigue - this time in traumatic brain injury.
https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-017-08846-6
Cognitive fatigue following traumatic brain injury appears to be mediated by dopamine signalling in the caudate nucleus of the basal ganglia with low...
Very interesting and congratulations.
Years ago when I had to travel for work purposes or in recent years to see family the only way I could manage it (for gut/bowel reasons mainly) was to completely fast for periods of up to 24 hours or so. I distinctly remember feeling much better during...
While I agree with the rest of your post especially re explaining other 'sensitivities' as far as I can tell the small peripheral nerve fibres are largely unmyelinated so unlikely to be related to MS.
@rvallee
I was surprised and delighted to hear that he had hooked up with Anne Oaklander. I had obliquely suggested that people with Fibro/ME/CFS contact her re SFPN in a previous blog ...
@rvallee
Thanks for posting this - fascinating stuff.
I've been hoping that someone would look into possible SFPN in ME/CFS for a long time as it ticks a lot of boxes as a possible source of ongoing peripheral stimulation that could keep central microglial activation cooking away. Not to...
There have been a (very) few studies on pre-pulse inhibition (PPI) of the startle reflex and event related potential (ERP) responses to sensory stimuli which are a similar thing and at the early procssing stage are pre attention/pre-conscious.
Interesting discussion.
Back in the world I was at one time responsible for a research programme looking at skills needs in the labour market. It was a first for the region but we could obviously draw on what had been done already in the rest of the UK and in other regions.
What we came up...
