'E-cigarettes help more smokers quit than patches and gum' (30.01.2019) Kelland / Reuters

Hi Rosie. I'm pretty much a newbie as far a vaping is concerned but there seem to be various combinations that are more tolerated than others if you want to discuss by PM?

'E-cigarettes help more smokers quit than patches and gum' (30.01.2019) Kelland / Reuters

I can only say anecdotally that after 30 plus years of heavy smoking (I restarted smoking shortly after ME onset o_O) I'm pretty sure I was at the stage of fairly advanced COPD (which killed my father). I've been off the cigs totally for 9 months now thanks to vaping and no intention of...

Is PEM cumulative? - public thread

Yes indeed. It seemed like nonense to me also (published in 1961 but no uptake afterwards) but did raise a doubt in my mind that what are usually considered signs on some sort of infection might be something else completely which has implications for a CFS/ME model.

Is PEM cumulative? - public thread

I wonder if what is usually described as swollen gland may be something this person describes as vascular neck pain and according to him due to autonomic dysfunction? https://mdedge-files-live.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/files/s3fs-public/issues/articles/media_9014c8c_ccq27_1-0005.pdf

Statins, Metformin and Calcium Blockers may help Schizophrenia

An interesting correlation between use of these medications and reduced symptoms in a large scale study. One proposed mechanism is a reduction in inflammation. Neuroscience News : https://neurosciencenews.com/statins-mental-health-10473/ SMC reaction ...

Two age peaks in the incidence of chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis: a population-based registry study from Norway…, 2014, Bakken+

Given the symptoms experienced that's hardly surprising. Most GP's would probably tell patients it's just getting older. By way of analogy my mother complained for years from mid 30's on that she had reached the menopause but was repeatedly told she was too young. Over time and with ongoing...

Measuring fatigue. Discussion of alternatives to questionnaires.

Wouldn't the design of any instrument depend on the intended use? For example is it to be used as a general purpose measure of 'fatigue'; to document problems with completing everyday tasks to demonstrate incapacity; to provide objective evidence that fatigue is not just perceptual; as a...

Two age peaks in the incidence of chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis: a population-based registry study from Norway…, 2014, Bakken+

I've no doubt the 20's can be demanding - perhaps what I have in mind is salience and/or multitasking and perhaps the demands around the two peaks are different but have similar effects. Teens have to deal with the realisation that exams etc are important whilst dealing with rapid changes due...

Persistent fatigue induced by interferon-alpha: A novel, inflammation-based, proxy model of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, 2018, Pariante et al

Perhaps they don't allow for predictions wrt the precise mechanisms involved in ME but it strikes me as useful to see further evidence that a fatigue state can persist in the absence of detectable peripheral immune activation; that there may be pro-dromal immune markers that convey an elevated...

Persistent fatigue induced by interferon-alpha: A novel, inflammation-based, proxy model of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, 2018, Pariante et al

I'm wondering whether high baseline levels of immunosuppressive IL10 or elevated IL6 levels post treatment contribute most to developing the persistent fatigue state (or perhaps they're interlinked?).

Erythrocyte Deformability As a Potential Biomarker for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Davis et al (2018)

Hi Chris The only prescription drug I've been on for any extended period of time has been Tagamet and that was decades ago although I was a heavy smoker until recently which probably didn't help. It seems to restricted to my arms and upper body but I've a number of other issues which might...

Petition: Review treatment of people with ME in Scotland

I largely keep out of these discussions but it seems to me that, if it is accepted that current intervention strategies (CBT/GET) are at best useless and that existing resources could be 'repurposed' or lost then the lack of effective alternatives leaves us with a dilemma. What may be the best...
