I need a good summary of the problems with mind-body theory

Gonna tag people who I think might have ideas @Jonathan Edwards @Caroline Struthers @Brian Hughes [I WISH GRAHAM WERE HERE] @Hutan But obviously anyone who has ideas is free to reply. I have probably forgotten some clever people.

I need a good summary of the problems with mind-body theory

What's your top article or paper (or even a short book) that you'd send to somebody from a scientific background who is semi-convinced by mind-body theory and you want to explain to them, scientifically, the problems with it? Without sounding like you're being skeptical of the importance of...

United Kingdom: ME Association governance issues

Sadly, the way that CS is dealing with this does not surprise me. I've noticed that (on the MEA Facebook page) he often responds impatiently and defensively to patients who give critical feedback.

Placebo effect: a psychosomatic component, or only an aggregate of other biases?

Yes. I learned recently, that in the famous Milgram Experiment, people who score highly for "agreeableness" are more likely to agree to inflict pain upon other people!

Will it ever be reasonably safe for PwME to go back into society, post-Covid?

Jonathan - what do you think now that the case numbers are rising again?

    Covid-19 vaccination experiences

Was feeling a bit better yesterday but now feeling really rotten again today. Sneezy, shivery, runny nose, generally feeling ill. I think it is most likely a vaccine reaction, given that (a) I rarely catch viruses since having ME, (b) my parents don't have any symptoms, (c) my chances of...

    Covid-19 vaccination experiences

PCR test came back negative. I'm feeling a bit better, so hopefully whatever it was (likely either a vaccine reaction or some other virus) is on its way out

    Covid-19 vaccination experiences

That's interesting. If my PCR test comes back negative then yeah it may be a vaccine reaction. I did get some similar symptoms after the first dose, but they started a few hours after the jab, and only lasted less than one day! And I kind of assumed that this time around, now that the swelling...

    Covid-19 vaccination experiences

... on second thoughts, we looked at the list of common symptoms for the delta variant in vaccinated people, and I do have some of those, so we're off to the walk-in PCR test site this afternoon... I'm not really worried, I'm vaccinated and my body usually beats off viruses pretty quickly.

    Covid-19 vaccination experiences

And yep, my lateral flow test was negative. I know that the lateral flows aren't as reliable as a PCR, but since I don't actually have any of the main covid symptoms, and my mum and dad don't have any symptoms at all, we don't feel there's any reason to order a PCR.

    Covid-19 vaccination experiences

I had quite bad arm pain for a few days after this, but it's gone now. Then today & yesterday I've been feeling shivery and generally unwell. Seems a bit late for a vaccine reaction given that it's a week since my jab. Probably I have picked some other mild virus up, or it's just my body being...

    UK genetic study on autism

I studied at Cambridge University, and Baron-Cohen is based in the psychology department there. It was well-known amongst autistic students at the uni that he was awful to autistic students, especially female ones. Never met him myself though. Unfortunately I don't remember the specifics of what...

    UK genetic study on autism

Yes, you can opt out of sharing your data with commercial partners. But you CANNOT opt out of your data being shared with other researchers for other studies - studies which we know nothing about.

    UK genetic study on autism

Yeah I don't believe them for a second. The project's co-lead, Daniel Geschwind, has links to an organisation called 'Cure Autism Now'. (For those not well-versed in autism issues, seeking a "cure" is bad because it would almost certainly lead to eugenics trying to do genetic screenings in...

Open Online Study into suitability of existing research questionnaires for use in ME/CFS research, Tufts Uni, VanElzakker, 2021

Very poorly designed IMO. I don't understand why so many scientists put out poorly designed surveys. At uni I had like 5 lectures on survey design, plus did a bit of reading. That's all it took for me to have a basic understanding of good survey design. Don't understand why so many scientists...
