The new vision from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), 2026, Taubenberger et al.

It reminds me of those corporate "new strategies!" that jokes are made of. Without an explanation for how it will improve research, it's just an empty headline.

    Coping with heat

Does Australia have the equivalent of chinook winds, causing an abrupt change in temperature? My place went from -20C range to above zero over the space of hours. The forecast is for more unseasonable temperatures (I see +11C listed). Does Australia get relief from some antarctic air...

How would a deficit in processing of physiological signals lead to ME/CFS?

I was surprised at some of the body's lengthy precision timings. My type IV sensitivity had my symptoms reliably flare up 48 hrs +/- just a few minutes, then it abruptly switched to 17.5 hrs, and later to 23.35 hrs. I also had a period where T2 (thyroid hormone) reduced my symptoms, and each...

    Coping with heat

I've experienced +40C and -45C, and much prefer the latter (with appropriate clothing). I actually got my first instance of frostbite (a white bump on a toe) this week. Too bad we can't transfer heat over the internet. I'd accept some of Australia's excess heat.

Mitochondrial transfer from glia to neurons protects against peripheral neuropathy, 2026, Xu et al

That's the sort of "previously unrecognized" I think might be involved in ME. Researchers haven't found a biomarker because they haven't been looking in the right places for the right sort of abnormalities. I doubt that anyone has checked that sort of mitochondrial transfer in PWME (vs...

ME/CFS epidemiology - early recovery (recovery in the first two years after onset)

If the question is how many people actually recover from actual ME in a certain time frame, then yes it does. If it's about claims of recovery from claimed ME, what weight should the conclusions have? Conclusions are only as good as the data it's based on.

Nail clipper and nail file recommendations

I once amazed one of my sister's friends. She had a picture with frameless glass, and one corner had chipped, leaving a sharp edge. I pulled out the diamond file I had in my backpack and proceeded to blunt the glass edge. I love pulling out odd tools and fixing problems.

    Feeling worse from oversleeping—poll

I'm not sure which way to vote. As with others, sleeping outside the normal times does make me feel worse. However, normally I can't fall asleep outside the normal times, so if I can fall asleep during the day, it's because I'm seriously ill, so that confounds the response. An oddity I...

ME/CFS epidemiology - early recovery (recovery in the first two years after onset)

It seems like a difficult topic to research, due to the lack of a reliable clinical test for ME. Did the recovered subjects really have ME, or did they have some somewhat similar symptoms due to some other cause? I can imagine two research groups doing the same study, accessing the same data...

Keeping clean when severe - a thread for tips

Since we see so many studies done on really ridiculous topics, I wonder whether there's a decent study on minimal washing routines. A quick check didn't show anything useful. I can imagine this being somewhat of a taboo topic in a society (in a relatively few decades) which seems horrified by...

Nail clipper and nail file recommendations

Yes, the diamonds are typically bonded in place by electroplating. If that's done improperly, with plain steel as a base, it can develop corrosion, which can spread. If the file was used wet, and/or stored in a humid environment (bathroom), I can see it failing that way. Since I happen to...

Nail clipper and nail file recommendations

How did it wear out? I have a diamond file that I've used for decades, on such materials as glass, hardened steel, etc, and it's still good. Keratin won't dull the diamonds, but I suppose skin acids might be able to destroy the metal binding the diamonds.

Keeping clean when severe - a thread for tips

I wasn't criticizing, I was pointing out that the frequency of cleaning might not be necessary. If the OP set that system based on "If I skip a day I start to stink", I thought it might be helpful to point out that body stinkiness isn't a linear function: it has a short-term peak, but then...

Keeping clean when severe - a thread for tips

If the complaint is the exertional cost of hygiene, why are you doing it so often? I live without plumbing, or even a heated space where I could splash water, so I just use a washcloth (without excess soap, and not antibiotic soap). I clean myself every 2-4 weeks (before going to town). I...

2025: looking back on a year of ME/CFS research

I see several negative findings. The question is: will that result in fewer studies continuing to look for the things that weren't found that are needed to support theories important to some people's careers?

Nail clipper and nail file recommendations

Toenail clippers work just as well on fingernails, but the extra leverage makes clipping easier than with those smaller clippers. I have really hard nails. I saw one batch of clippers that had been machined with incorrect position, so the blades didn't line up, so do check that the blades meet...

Metabolic adaptation and fragility in healthy 3-D in vitro skeletal muscle tissues exposed to [CFS] and Long COVID-19 sera, 2025, Mughal+

I recently read a news item about an AI designed to find patterns in really complex systems. Sounds like a good thing for figuring out ME. However, the problem is providing all the necessary data on the components of the system. Some factors are easily measured in plasma, but some are hidden...

Hypotheses and Research Directions for ME/CFS

Regarding signs of reduced blood flow in capillaries, I occasionally get abcesses in the tissue at the sides of my nails (hands and feet). My theory is that tissue has poor capillary access, and so it's easy for tissue to die and become necrotic. If ME involved reduced blood flow, I should...

Hypotheses and Research Directions for ME/CFS

I think it might help if we had more challenging and rating of assumptions. For example, I think far too much effort has been wasted on the assumption that we have Chronic Normal Fatigue. If we can't clearly differentiate between normal fatigue and ME's fatigue-like symptom, at least give...

Preprint Distinct Symptom Clusters Reflect Pathophysiological Mechanisms in ME/CFS, 2025, Habermann-Horstmeier et al

Does anyone else think this analysis seems a lot like seeing pattern in the stars and attributing meaning to human personality?
