Massage therapies including Bowen Therapy and myofascial release

The Perrin technique is discussed here: Perrin Technique ***** I came across this article this morning. The link was from a canine massage therapist, but the article is about human massage. Apparently, it is a myth that massage disperses lactic acid from muscles after exercise, and that in...

A general thread on the PACE trial!

And as patient experiences of conventional care differ widely, it is likely there was nothing standard about SMC! On top of that many GPs use the less formal version of GET - it goes along the lines of “I’ve heard that exercise helps with ME, you should make sure to fit some exercise into your...

A general thread on the PACE trial!

Now this is getting weird. The current NICE guidelines (CG53) recommending CBT & GET were put in place in 2007. I’m not sure of timescales, but is it possible that some PACE trial participants were getting CBT/GET as part of SMC? Or had the trial period ended before CG53 came into effect?

UK House of Lords/ House of Commons - relevant people and questions

So . . . the PACE Trial used Standard Medical Care + additional therapy. Is this a way of saying PACE is also biased? Is that what you mean @Jonathan Edwards ?

    The troubled history of psychiatry

Which should of course mean that all their conclusions are probable rather than certain. They also should be looking for multiple explanations for the outcomes their trials produce. Eg Benefits being linked to worse outcomes. We understand the least healthy will be awarded most benefits -...

    The troubled history of psychiatry

Psychiatry can be just weird. On one hand psychiatrists want to claim as many disorders/illnesses as possible for themselves. Presumably so they can be paid to “treat” them. Then on the other hand they try to dismiss as many of these disorders/illnesses as possible as psychosomatic, or as...

Trial By Error: A Plea to Fiona Godlee on a Familiar Topic

If very sick patients can find it, why not clinicians with a special interest in ME? Google? Facebook? Twitter? Why would a clinician in today’s world NOT go and look to see what else is being said? Maybe I’m naive in thinking they want to know?

Cognitive behavioural therapy for ME/chronic fatigue syndrome is not effective. Re-analysis of a Cochrane review, 2019, Vink & Vink-Niese

Some thoughts on “fatigue” which in general language = “tired” Chronic fatigue therefore = “tired all the time”. As a child, if I ever said I was “tired” there were a few standard responses from my parents: - Well get to bed at the proper time, and you’ll not be so tired! - Once you get going...

SMILE trial data to be released

So -5 and +5 are only possible where initial attendance is either full, or zero respectively! Thus seeing only the change is weird because there are variable floor and ceiling effects for each individual! In reality this forces most of the outcomes to the centre of the range.

Blog: Steve Topple, "Hi vis vests? Sunflower badges? Next, disabled people will have to wear black triangles."

I started to read this article, but got annoyed when he wrote against the Sunflower lanyards. I’ve used one a couple of times, and the system works brilliantly. I look totally healthy. Before the lanyards, I remember once asking could I short-cut one of those zig-zaggy lines for queuing and...

    ME from stress ?

Perhaps the stress event is the final trigger, taking an individual with established (but not yet fully evident, or diagnosed) ME, to a substantially more severe level? Stress events demand energy to cope with them. So it would make sense that the event might worsen ME. If ME had not been...

Response to Michael Sharpe’s claims of harassment

Just to be clear, this clip was produced by the BBC?? Yes? And, has it already been aired? Or is it yet to be shown?

S4ME letter to NICE and Replies, re: "three members of the ME/CFS Guideline Committee have a conflict of interest"

When GCSEs came in (80’s) the science subjects encorporated experimental design into the curriculum. However those educated before this time had much less training on the scientific method, and many teachers had to be trained up in order to teach it. I have hope that the next generation might...

Special Report - Online activists are silencing us, scientists say Reuters March 2019

Just thought - IF they now prefer one method over another because it gives results more consistent with previous results - THEN does that not suggest they ran both methods to get the respective outcomes BEFORE deciding to change to the alternative method? Otherwise how could they know which...

Indeed. I think it might. It would me, if I stumbled on this article knowing nothing, but wanting to follow a scandal. ;)

Special Report - Online activists are silencing us, scientists say Reuters March 2019

Thinking of the last Kate Kelland piece on the anticipated Cochrane review withdrawal. I thought in that piece she included enough detail for an astute reader to pick up some concern on the real issues. And this article too (as I said up thread somewhere) gives strong hints towards an...
