UK: Priority Setting Partnership for ME/CFS

There is definitely a case that we should do things slightly differently for ME, and I tried to articulate this myself at least once. The same treatment doesn't always mean equal treatment, or fair treatment.

UK: Priority Setting Partnership for ME/CFS

Sadly, PSPs don't do that. They just raise priorities and researchers are left to do as they want with them. Personally, I wanted fewer 'pet theories' in there (e.g., the ones about exploring presumed immune, mitochondrial, vascular and neurological dysfunctions) for the simple reason that they...

A classification system for Post-Acute Sequelae of SARS CoV-2 Infection, 2022, Jason and Islam

Yes, it's to rule out self-resolving PVFS. Of course, the reality is that people usually won't be diagnosed by six months anyway (at least, not here in the UK). This is where clinical and research purposes differ. Moving the timeframe forward a bit in clinical guidelines can help persuade GPs...

“Like before, but not exactly”: the Qualy-REACT qualitative inquiry into the lived experience of long COVID, 2022, Schiavi et al

Ah. It's that 'vicious cycle' again. When issuing rehab, I hope they check the bikes to make sure they aren't the vicious kind?

Trial of Long Covid treatment - AXA1125 from Axcella Therapeutics, 2021

Rice and peas is also a complete protein, which is why it is such a popular food in the Caribbean (and why there are variations on this in countries all over the world). So serve yourself some jerk chicken and rice and peas, and you'll be cured! There. That's my homemade Caribbean cure for...

Royal College of Psychiatrists apologising for saying things about PD patients that sound similar to what has been said about ME/CFS patients

That second sentence is also a bit interminable. They need to be introduced to proper punctuation as well as manners, and that elusive thing we call humility.

Predictors for Developing Severe Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome following Infectious Mononucleosis, 2022, Jason et al

Ah, I misread the results section. They don't confirm that the patients still have severe GI symptoms after diagnosis, but they do have them before IM and at the point of IM developing, so it's a fair bet. Severe GI symptoms at the diagnosis stage would skew the results on the DSQ if not...

Eye movements may be key to chronic fatigue syndrome diagnosis

My eyes are always a mess these days, even as some other symptoms have got better. It'll be interesting to see what they come up with. It might just be a general marker for fatigue or maybe even brain changes, but even that would be useful.

Predictors for Developing Severe Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome following Infectious Mononucleosis, 2022, Jason et al

Is there a circularity here? Jason says patients who fit more than one set of criteria have more symptoms, and therefore have severe ME. But a predictor for those people having more symptoms is... having more symptoms before they even get ME. And not just any symptoms, but symptoms that...

Implementation statement in support of ME/CFS diagnosis and management, NICE, draft published for consultation

The other thing to bear in mind is that a number of stakeholders complained that the new GL would be impractical and too expensive. So they may have done this out of an abundance of caution to answer those claims.

Open UK - Recruiting: Novel Dynamic Proteomics Approaches to Investigate the Systems Level Pathology of ME/CFS

A CPET is normally for 10-12 mins. So this is definitely longer than usual, and this must be because they want to be sure they can provoke PEM in all patients. But again, I'm not sure how many people will sign up to this.

Open UK - Recruiting: Novel Dynamic Proteomics Approaches to Investigate the Systems Level Pathology of ME/CFS

Rate of perceived exertion (RPE) is one of the measures used in a CPET. It's part of how they assess if it was truly 'maximal' effort. That in itself isn't problematic if it's just part of a range of measures used. A bigger problem will be the exercise and travel required for the study, and the...

    Discord banned a ME/CFS server

Sounds like a reasonable theory to me. I moderate a Discord server and Discord is relatively strict about what it allows to go on through its platform.

2022 Guardian: "How to move: exercising with chronic fatigue syndrome" and related articles

BJC probably offered a free article, and the Guardian, desperate for content because they pay the least of the major newspapers (at least here in the UK), jumped at it. It's sadly how a lot of publications fill gaps in their publishing schedule with these sorts of 'articles', and PR companies...

Evaluating case diagnostic criteria for ME/CFS: toward an empirical case definition, 2022, Conroy, Jason et al

Arguably, the things you list ('orthostatic, noise, light, chemical, mold, cognitive, physical, jostling, interpersonal, etc') could be covered by the three listed domains (physical, cognitive and emotional). E.g., orthostatic triggers could be seen as physical exertion (you are moving, after...

2022 Guardian: "How to move: exercising with chronic fatigue syndrome" and related articles

Does anyone know who the editor for Guardian Australia is? It might be worth pinging them a correction to point out a) the Cochrane review uses an outdated and overly broad definition of CFS that might not correlate with the illness diagnosed today and b) it conflates all exercise interventions...
