Article: The alarming hijacking of the BioPsychoSocial model

Thanks for posting this @JellyBabyKid I have great trouble understanding terms like ‘Power of beliefs’, ‘true BPS model’, ‘doctors believe’. They don’t sound scientific to me. Interestingly, the author doesn’t seem to ‘believe’ in CFS, judging by the quotation marks. The fact that many...

How many of you have cats and how many have been tested for cat scratch disease?

Yes, we are animals. That’s what I’m always trying to tell people about ‘No animals allowed’ signs. Most of them don’t understand when I ask how can I come inside... I prefer them alive, they are wonderful creatures and far more interesting than most humans. My cat has taught me a lot about CFS...

How many of you have cats and how many have been tested for cat scratch disease?

Thanks guys. Yes, I was referring to Bartonella infection. Over here the test is not covered by my health insurance and it’s very expensive. I was thinking of chronic exposure and the immune response as a possible source of constant fatigue, not the acute infection, which is frequently mild. By...

The ‘cognitive behavioural model’ of chronic fatigue syndrome: Critique of a flawed model, 2019, Geraghty et al

I have the feeling that my chronic fatigue is partially congenital, I’ve been prone to allergies and inflammation since I was a baby, and partially acquired, as a response to infection (most likely viral). I felt really bad after being hit in less than a year by Dengue Fever and H1N1 flu. I...

How many of you have cats and how many have been tested for cat scratch disease?

It may sound a strange question! I’m just curious because my symptoms have worsened since I had rescued a kitten and being a dog-person you have no idea how many times I’ve been scratched and bitten by the little furry thing! Do you think a poll would be better?

The ‘cognitive behavioural model’ of chronic fatigue syndrome: Critique of a flawed model, 2019, Geraghty et al

Very interesting discussion, thanks! I’ve never been a subject of CBT and I have no idea what exactly are the procedures involved, and I have to admit that I don’t like Psychology theories in general. I have many friends who are Psychologists, each one following a particular ‘school’ of...

My scalp gets electric shock feelings and I have to shake my head and blink so I can focus on what's happening.

Brain throwing a party before bed - not pleasant

I have this since... I was born? I have always assumed this was part of my peculiar migraineur brain. Do you remember a Michael Jackson video clip Black and White, where people's faces kept changing one into another? What I see with my eyes closed (and even with my eyes open, during a migraine...

Mystery illnesses reveal the power of our minds to influence health, New Scientist

Yes, I'm new to the forum. Good to know you're a Professor! I had my first episode of Plaque Psoriasis when I was 11 and the only treatment that has ever helped are TNF-alpha inhibitors so I guess it's an immune disorder, maybe not the 'classical' definition of autoimmune, ie, autoantibodies...

Mystery illnesses reveal the power of our minds to influence health, New Scientist

Plaque Psoriasis and Psoriatic arthritis are autoimmune diseases. I agree that categorisation of illnesses is a necessary evil, but I don't see how 'functional' is relevant to the name unless it would be called "Idiopathic Functional Neuro Disorder". That would reassure patients that the...

Thank you very much, @Dx Revision Watch. I knew Asperger's wouldn't fit the category, but I just wanted to ask the question because although it's classified as a 'Neurodevelopment Disorder' it's also described as 'Autism spectrum disorder without disorder of intellectual development' so what is...

Mystery illnesses reveal the power of our minds to influence health, New Scientist

I see that wikipedia calls it 'Functional neurological symptom disorder'. My bolding. Even more descriptive. One differential diagnosis is hemiplegic migraine, which runs in the maternal side of my family. I wonder if it's just a matter of time to find out the 'structural cause'.

Thanks. I agree, the term functional is merely descriptive.

Mystery illnesses reveal the power of our minds to influence health, New Scientist

Thanks @Jonathan Edwards. So, it's called functional based on lack of another explanation (ie, physical abnormality), so why not call it idiopathic? I find it hard to accept that something is being categorised without clear boundaries. I don't see how this term can render these conditions less...

Mystery illnesses reveal the power of our minds to influence health, New Scientist

Thanks @strategist. While I understand that 'functional' is being used to refer to diseases of 'emotional' and 'mental' origin, and that some disturbance of function is present, I still find it an unscientific term, unless it points to the specific function that's altered and the cause of...

Hi guys, I'm enjoying the discussion, you are very knowledgeable. I am just an observer for the time being, until I can absorb more info and have some time to process it (menopausal aspie brain is a bit slow these days). I thought conditions whose cause is unknown or uncertain are called...

    Neuropathic pain

Hi @adambeyoncelowe, Yes, I have. I think it's exactly what's happening but it doesn't explain all symptoms. I had a boyfriend who has Metabolic Syndrome and he didn't have any of my symptoms, so I guess there's something else going on. Also, I don't have increased thirst and urination nor...
