If there is a factor in the serum, why is plasma exchange not working?

There are quite a few "chemicals" circulating in our blood, and many of them are in incredibly small quantities. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/02/110224145609.htm If you don't know what you are looking for, and if the unknown chemical only differs slightly from "normal" chemicals...

The Stanford Hall consensus statement for post-COVID-19 rehabilitation, 2020, Barker-Davies et al

I had a quick scan, got half way down and lost the will to live. I truly hope that none of these COVID patients fall into the ME camp, because there seems to be a lot of slack in these statements to promote CBT and GET.

UK Planned study: Feasibility of investigating VO2, HR, BP, lactic acid and activity of pwME during normal daily activity, 2020/21, Clague-Baker et al

I've spent quite a bit of time on this, and was getting near to testing our final ideas for a diagnostic cognitive test out here, but e-coli infections have set me back. I'll be resting awhile, but get back to you sometime. Initial results are quite promising.

Updated: PACE - Part 3: Criteria Video

It's so hard to be concise, clear and accurate at the same time, but again you have done it! Well done!

The Chronic Elephant blog by hellytheelephant

On that theme, what do you do with dirty soap? Can soap actually be dirty? If soap needs washing, what do you wash it with? Sometimes it's the really deep questions of the universe that trouble me most.

If toilet paper is so good at killing germs, why are we encouraged to wash our hands after using it?

    Trial By Error: What Now?

Sorry, I blundered! I misunderstood Adam's comment to mean that he was looking for something to take on as well, and was suggesting something for him. Of course, the theme was something for Dave, and I was too brainfogged to work that out. Doh! Dave got in touch and I have enlightened him. My...

    Trial By Error: What Now?

I've got a little project on the go at the moment if you would like to dabble. Trish, Barry and IW have been involved, and it hasn't yet damaged them beyond repair!

Beyond Bones - relevance of variants of connective tissue (Hypermobility) to Fibromyalgia, ME/CFS - Eccles et al Feb 2020

Me too Dolphin, but it is interesting that three of the members of our local ME support group, who each have had a diagnosis of ME for many many years, have recently been diagnosed with EDS: a new member also shares some of their characteristics.

How do we make sure ME prevelance numbers are as accurate as possible?

Good point. What I don't understand is why the researchers who come up with these figures don't try to put them together as I have just to see if they are roughly consistent. But then, my experience with PACE leads me to think that perhaps many of them just don't think...

How do we make sure ME prevelance numbers are as accurate as possible?

I've been thinking more about this. Well, something has to be going on in my mind when I'm waiting to fall asleep. My rough calculation is based on a number of simplifications. 1. I have ignored weird teenage effects. 2. I have assumed a negligible recovery rate. It would have to be quite...

How do we make sure ME prevelance numbers are as accurate as possible?

In the UK, home of the delightful Oxford criteria, the PACE trial had 640 participants who satisfied the Oxford criteria for CFS, but only a little over a half of those satisfied London criteria for ME or "international" criteria for CFS. It's hard to know how many of the 250,000 said to have...

Well done, Adam. Clear, concise, comprehensive and classy. I'm talking about the video, of course.

    'Recovery' statistics

It's difficult, but one problem with backing out of telling the truth is that it encourages them to look at con artists who convince them that they have the answer. It also encourages them to strive for unlikely goals, often damaging themselves further in the process. Those who do recover...

    'Recovery' statistics

It reminds me of when you have tossed a coin, but not yet uncovered it, and asked what the chances are of it being a head. There is no such chance: it already either is or is not a head (unless Schrodinger's cat is watching). English is a poor language to use for logical thought.

Dialogues for a neglected illness - videos on experiences of people with ME (funded by Wellcome Foundation)

Oh the AfME one knocks spots of anything I have! And, of course it is up to date. Bear in mind though that much of (most of) the spending on ME is the psych stuff. The only point I like to make when people ask me about the lack of findings (or rather substantial findings) is to ask them how...
