News from Aotearoa/New Zealand and the Pacific Islands

The quake at 2.30am was pretty strong here - got me out of bed. I’m not near the coast so I’m safe from the water...

Central Sensitization in Neurological, Psychiatric, and Pain Disorders: A Multicenter Case-Controlled Study, Suzuki et al, 2021

Well the questionnaire is the Central Sensitisation Inventory - how much more evidence do you need that CSS exists??? :banghead: It’s amazing that you can put together a list of symptoms that commonly co-occur, give the list a label and hey presto, you have a diagnosis - even better you can then...

News about Long Covid including its relationship to ME/CFS 2020 to 2021

Well they wouldn’t want to compare it to ME....

I couldn’t face watching either programme...(not sure whether that says more about my energy levels or my expectations of what was likely to be said!)

Anyone with SVT (supraventricular tachycardia)? Have you used Kardia Mobile?

Thanks for the info @ahimsa - I really have no idea what kind of arrhythmia it is! I just get mostly very short episodes where my heart rate suddenly doubles.. never caught on an ECG and never actually captured by anyone medical! At least I now have evidence that something happens.... and if...

Maternal Psychological Factors and Onset of Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders in Offspring, Baldassarre et al, 2021

Don’t you just love the way research seems to be conducted now in psychology? So the results show “No significant association was found between FGIDs and psychiatric symptoms and maternity blues at any timepoint.” And they state in the conclusion that “Maternal psychological factors might...

Anyone with SVT (supraventricular tachycardia)? Have you used Kardia Mobile?

I guess I do have this - although its never been captured on an ECG. I can see the episodes from my Apple Watch data. Luckily it never lasts very long - usually less than a minute.

New Garmin “High Intensity Exercise” monitoring and what it showed my body is doing

I have an Apple Watch. It doesn’t alert me to periods of high HR, but I was looking at the heart rate data on my phone and i can see plenty of episodes of tachycardia - some of which I was aware of and some of which I wasn’t! It does seem to correlate with how I am feeling generally with...

The use of the labels ME, CFS, ME/CFS

I tend to use CFS because if I say ME to people, they look at me blankly. That happened last week with the oral surgeon. He had no idea what I was talking about until I said “Chronic fatigue syndrome” - and even then he wasn’t much the wiser. I would love a better/different label altogether.

Open GEM study - Prevalence of genetic diseases in ME/CFS patients, 2022, Esther Crawley, Bristol University

I cant think of any valid reason for this study. Unless of course I was the researcher getting just over half a million to complete it...... Ive met two people with Pompe’s disease in my old working life - symptoms nothing like ME in my (admittedly not very knowledgeable) opinion.

Trisha Greenhalgh on ME/CFS and Long Covid

It’s interesting how the term ‘activist’ is admired when its applied to something currently in vogue, but a derogatory term when applied to something not trendy.

PEM: Swimming compared to other activities?

Too aerobic for me now... walking is my best ‘exercise’. I used to enjoy triathlons but I cant do any of those activities now. I could probably swim slowly for a couple of minutes.. but i now get cramps and raynauds from cold water!

The possibility of autoimmunity or auto-reactivity in ME/CFS

I had months of joint pain mostly in my hands, wrists and ankles following my initial parvovirus infection which i credit to being the start of my loss of good health. I have also had a number of episodes of uveitis - with no apparent cause... and frozen shoulders and hips...both of which I had...

Ensuring severely affected can be heard

I dont mind the option of a rating scale but i think there needs to be room for qualitative info so that if you want, you can add explanation. If the commenting box is optional, then those that find this too hard can leave it blank and those who dont find it easy to pick a number can explain why...

    Muscle cramps

Thanks everyone for your thoughts! I’m going to try some rehydration solution and see if that makes any difference. I’m not on any medications so it cant be that. Hopefully its just a phase I’m going through....

    Muscle cramps

This is becoming an increasing annoyance for me. I get cramps all through my abdomen from being in the car when I have to constantly brace myself for the changes in direction and speed. I now have to support myself with my arms when I’m sitting upright at the table... And more recently I am...

BPS attempts at psychologizing Long Covid

This just strikes me as the words of someone who needs to feel that everyone loves them.... My patients come to see me because they need me - I’m special - and they dont have anyone else.... Yuk.
