Human Herpesvirus-6 Reactivation, Mitochondrial Fragmentation, and the Coordination of Antiviral and Metabolic Phenotypes in ME/CFS - 2020 - Schreiner

I did have stiffness and brisk knee reflexes (according to a neurologist) for some time during and after the POTS onset. I looked up what brisk reflexes meant and it can mean demyelination. In practice it meant I could not move my legs and feet in the same way as I would before while walking...

Personality as a risk factor for ME/CFS and similar diseases

It is so strange to believe in psychosomatics. Freud said he had figured out hysteria over a century ago and that he knew how to cure it. Why are all these cures not materializing? A century is plenty of time to refine and perfect the therapy.

Human Herpesvirus-6 Reactivation, Mitochondrial Fragmentation, and the Coordination of Antiviral and Metabolic Phenotypes in ME/CFS - 2020 - Schreiner

What does fatigue and weakness caused by problems with the brain's motor centers feel like? Assuming that this causes these symptoms.

Personality as a risk factor for ME/CFS and similar diseases

It's not possible to tell from this observation if her behaviour played any role in getting ME. It could have made no difference as well. I think there is the human tendency to look for explanations and speculate about ways a disease could have been averted because it's unpleasant to think that...

Personality as a risk factor for ME/CFS and similar diseases

Psychosomatics has replaced religion as thing people turn to when there is no hope left. What they have in common is that they both promise you'll be cured if you become a better person. The reality is that getting ill had very little or nothing to do with being a bad person. We just like to...

Human Herpesvirus-6 Reactivation, Mitochondrial Fragmentation, and the Coordination of Antiviral and Metabolic Phenotypes in ME/CFS - 2020 - Schreiner

So all these studies of white blood cell energy metabolism are like the man searching for his keys under the lamp post because it's easier to see there? Speaking of the liver, this organ has not gotten much attention despite being a possible suspect.

Human Herpesvirus-6 Reactivation, Mitochondrial Fragmentation, and the Coordination of Antiviral and Metabolic Phenotypes in ME/CFS - 2020 - Schreiner

Shows how broken research is I think, but maybe I'm just underestimating the amount of work this takes. How hard is it to repeat the most important experiment in this study say 40 times or whatever passes as reasonably well powered? With the coronavirus, they can get studies done in a few weeks.

Human Herpesvirus-6 Reactivation, Mitochondrial Fragmentation, and the Coordination of Antiviral and Metabolic Phenotypes in ME/CFS - 2020 - Schreiner

Referring to the image above, most ME/CFS papers don't report such clear differences. That is encouraging. However it could be that the resistance to viruses is not specific to ME/CFS or indicative of viruses being the problem. It could be part of an unspecific response to illness.

The iatrogenic power of labeling MUS: A critical review and meta-analysis of “diagnosis threat” in mild head injury, 2020, Niesten et al

What about the harmful effects of people who write and believe in this stuff? How about trying to estimate how much quackery is driven by guidelines that recommend downplaying, ignoring, psychosomatizing unexplained symptoms? With patients then having no choice but to try alternative medicine.

Three months of bed rest induce a residual transcriptomic signature resilient to resistance exercise countermeasures, 2020, Fernandez-Gonzalo et al

I think propensity to have PEM and sleep disruption developed together in a prodromal phase in my case, with no relationship to excessive bed rest. Only after the illness onset did I have to begin reducing my activity levels.

Physical activity measures in patients with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome [...], 2020, Rowe et al

On the topic of push ups and skeletal muscles. A while ago I changed my physical activity from walking to push ups and pull ups. About 15 and 5 on most days, sometimes repeated later in the day. I clearly gained muscle strength and mass but my endurance has changed very little. My feeling is...

CBT combined with music therapy for chronic fatigue following Epstein-Barr virus infection in adolescents: a feasibility study, 2020, Wyller et al

According to the CBT model, decreased physical activity would produce a worsening of CFS and PEM. That's why the aim of the therapy is ultimately to increase physical activity. What is happening here? Also note that steps per day is probably a more accurate measure of health status than...

A Novel Integrative Psychotherapy for Psychogenic Nonepileptic Seizures Based on the Biopsychosocial Model, 2020, Ben-Naim et al

The results do not support claims of effectivenes because the study is of very low quality. Curiously, most participants have "epileptic seizures" listed as comorbidity. Presumably that means the authors believe they have both organic and psychogenic seizures. Is there a simpler explanation for...

A Unifying Hypothesis of the Pathophysiology of (ME/CFS): Recognitions from the finding of autoantibodies against ß2-adrenergic receptors: Wirth 2020

I think I might be able to demonstrate with a simple test that there is a circulatory problem. If I stand on my feet and reach down to pet my cat, and then after 10 or 20 seconds bring the head back up, I feel unwell (dizzy, malaise, weak). If I repeat this posture change (giving the body some...
