Periodic Paralysis, myotonia, channelopathy and ME

I only had "paralyses" two times, both in the right leg. I imagined it to be "exhaustion symptoms". I think there could be several reasons, and it's nothing like you report here.

Periodic Paralysis, myotonia, channelopathy and ME

I thought about a study which looked into channelopathies in ME. You found it :)

How are channelopathies examined? It's always "crazy" what illnesses exist! Very interesting, in a way. Thanks for these infos.

How near are we to a diagnostic biomarker? What is it likely to be?

Thank you, @Ron, for your explanation! Should one be cautious with results by Lombardi when during the XMRV "hassle" it became public the findings were due to contamination in Lombardi's lab? Or did I get that wrong?

How near are we to a diagnostic biomarker? What is it likely to be?

Maybe I misunderstand you here. As I understood epigenetics is, amongst others (mutations would be the other), something like a "switch". The genome is like a big database with lots of "recipes". The cell reads parts of genes in order to produce proteins/amino acids. Epigenetics would be an...

How near are we to a diagnostic biomarker? What is it likely to be?

There is an ongoing study (online only) by Nancy Klimas about genes, and you can upload 23andme-data (and another company was mentioned) only. There is a thread somewhere on s4me but don't know anymore where.

How near are we to a diagnostic biomarker? What is it likely to be?

What about epigenetics and/or mutations (e.g. as in mastocytosis)? Many rare illnesses are very hard to diagnose. In many cases genetic testing is very helpful or it ascertains a suspicion. In MS, there is no biomarker in itself, and often it is diagnosed in a later stage (although maybe it...

How near are we to a diagnostic biomarker? What is it likely to be?

Would you be willing to explain what the picture shows? In the article Dr. Lombardi is mentioned. Is this the same Lombardi from the XMRV topic?

What treatment trials for ME/CFS are currently ongoing?

I participate in that study (but cannot say more). Maybe results can be published some time in 2018. I am myself very curious about the results.

What treatment trials for ME/CFS are currently ongoing?

My information from the team was the immunadsorption study is finished, but the results are not published yet, it seems. HyQvia (immunoglobulins) is on-going.

What treatment trials for ME/CFS are currently ongoing?

Hi @Cheshire, great list, thank you so much! The immunadsorption and HyQvia trials are treatment trials, aren't they?

Sickness behaviour – useful concept or psycho-humbug?

That's what I understood, too. I was told my bodily symptoms resulted from a hidden, underlying conflict that could only be resolved with psychotherapy. (And again, something I know from religion.) I wondered why this could only be achieved by a psychotherapist, why he can unfold my inner...

Sickness behaviour – useful concept or psycho-humbug?

The biggest problem with psycho-people is that, often, you cannot argue logically. Well, that's my experience. It's like religion. All the pointing out facts will lead to nowhere, just their stating that what they say is true. The word "true" alone tells everything. It most often gets very...

Sickness behaviour – useful concept or psycho-humbug?

It most often is in my experience. That's why things must be defined in an exact manner, at least on paper and always in science. When speaking I always try to understand what the person in front me means by the words he uses. It may sound "technical", and most will say: "You cannot speak while...

Open (MA, USA) “Brain Scan Study [PET-MR] of ME/CFS, 2023, VanElzakker

SPECT scan shows the oxygen metabolism in the brain, PET the glucose metabolism (by injecting "radioactive glucose"). I hope I recalled correctly. That PET scan publication motivated me to do a PET scan. Byron Hyde used (uses?) SPECT scans to diagnose ME.

Do you think it might help anything if I asked them if they could explain to me why exercise doesn't help me although I do light training as proposed by them? Probably not.

    USA - Mayo clinic

If I say I was doing sports before and still do as is possible (not so much :( ) and this doesn't change my state to any better, I NEVER get an answer to why is that. That's very frustrating, to say it nicely. There are others, too, who did an organized sports program - some who were...

What treatment trials for ME/CFS are currently ongoing?

Isn't that one finished, and wasn't the success negative? Or is there a second trial?
