I agree about the variety of conditions dumped into the FND bucket. But we have seen enough published case studies of people who have been given an FND diagnosis and then have gone on to have worsening symptoms and eventually be diagnosed with a progressive neurological diseases to question the...
Why would a trial like this report the numbers of people with each sort of marital status (single, married, divorced, widowed)? Or number of children?
Can you imagine them saying 'our treatment works for married people only'? No - there's no conceivable mechanism for that. So why not only...
Fairly small sample size, which is not reported in the abstract.
Quite a lot of loss of patients from the intention to treat - so they are only getting data from a select group. And no controls.
There's this website, which provides summaries about a range of anaesthetic related issues for doctors and student doctors. I've given the link to a page about MS. It would be great to see a good page on ME/CFS on the website - it would be a good place to link to, I think...
It looks like a helpful resource, very comprehensive and empowering. Quite a number of points there that I would not have thought about. Things like, if you are taking LDN, you need to tell the doctors about that, as it could affect your response to pain medication.
In my limited experience...
Some info that may perhaps help with understanding the CD40/CD40L costimulatory pathway
The CD40/CD40L costimulatory pathway in inflammatory bowel disease, a 2004 paper,
So, if the information from that old paper is still right,
1. The T-cell is stimulated by an antigen
2. And then it is...
At what point did the BPS brigade actually not focus on psychological factors?
Oh, please. We've been fending off poorly based claims that cortisol is somehow different in people with ME/CFS and LC, compared to normal people, for ages now. And this difference (sometimes higher, sometimes...
:) The post-infection illness is probably because of his perfectionism. Or alpha personality. Or hyper vigilance.
There's always a reason that blames the ill person, that's the joy of the BPS theory.
Targeting the comments that have more likes, and not copying the ones that are just a brief expression of disbelief and outrage and observations of the irony, apologies to those whose comments I didn't copy, selection was a bit random, especially as I got tireder:
Strange choice for your...
There are over 50 replies to that tweet, and not a single one is positive about Wessely.
There's no reaction from the Institute of Medical Ethics of course.
It's incredible how impervious Wessely and his reputation is to the legitimate criticism from the many people he has harmed.
Just as an aside, the cortisol results at least are underwhelming. Results from both ME/CFS and Long Covid do not suggest there is, on average, a problem with cortisol. Happy to discuss on a more appropriate thread.
I've heard Bryan Johnson on the radio this year, talking about the extraordinary lengths he is going to to live healthily and so extend his life. That's a really interesting article about him suffering long term consequences from Covid-19 in 2022.
Yeah, so the more common claim (as exemplified in that 2023 Nature paper SNT quoted above) is that cortisol is slightly lower in LC and ME/CFS compared to healthy controls. And yet, in this one they report higher levels than normal. But they didn't have healthy controls, so maybe the...

A new study out from researchers at Daejeon University looking at fatigue, cortisol and cytokine levels in people with Long Covid. This team may be leaning towards a BPS view of Long Covid - HPA axis gets a run.
Clinical and Laboratory Characteristics of Fatigue-dominant Long-COVID subjects: A...
