ScieneAlert: Scientists Have Found an Important Reason You Might Want to Reconsider Taking Probiotics

In a new study led by a team from Augusta University, researchers found what they say is the first known link between probiotic use, bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine, and symptoms of disorienting brain fogginess.

In the study, patients who reported confusion and difficulty concentrating – in addition to experiencing gas and bloating feelings – were found to be harbouring large colonies of bacteria breeding in their small intestines, with high levels of D-lactic acid being produced by bacterial fermentation of sugars in their food.

Study the article is based upon:

    Interesting.

    Q. Is SIBO actually curable? Or once you've got it, is it just a matter of control?

I have gathered there is an antibiotic that is effective. Though I guess if we are prone to a particular type of infection it can recur.

I think doctors use Rifampin or Rifaximin.

SIBO is not a disease in itself. It all depends on what is causing it. There are LOTS of possibilities..
Rifaximin and metronidazole/neomycim are usually used alone or in combimatiom depending on the type of gas present.

Funny thing is that my last step to ME/CFS was actually probiotics, which led to SIBO and ME/CFS. I wasn't completely healthy before taking them, but they reaaally messed me up..

And the brain fog... probably my worst symptom. Seems like it's even worse than average ME/CFS patient.

I guess this means I can stop feeling guilty for not taking a pro-biotic?

off topic post, with added tmi to boot.

i have a tooth [i think also bone] abscess [which means extraction of two teeth. the problem is that i ahve hyperalgesia. i also have severe opioid intolerance for unknown reasons. i also have the unusual case of no anti-nausea that i have tried working.].

so i take goldenseal [which is the only antibiotic of many i have tried that i know i do not react to. but a recent paper says that it is bad for your mitochondria.] to try to keep the pain down while i try to figure out getting them extracted].

i am bedridden except bathroom. and have cognitive issues. and can't make phone calls. and finding a house call tooth extractor is not trivial.

and while it is a trivial problem, goldenseal causes diarrhea. not bad. just figure it is better to not have that.

and i have a serious, worsening, not diagnosed, life threatening systemic angioedema that is triggered by at least soap, and so i am not using soap. and i am immunocompromised and so hygiene is useful. and it's just a preference thing but i prefer no diarhea becauyse i want to be clean. like i imagine most onrmal people.

[and also do not want to give mold any further opportunities as i have severe mold issues and it is a wdb also and diarrhea causes mold issues. the further consequences of diarrhea per se are trivial [just itching that is controllable] but i figure best not to encourage mold anyway.]

so i take jarrow-dophilus or something, which perfectly stops the mild diarrhea. but now i find out it could cause sibo? maybe i should stop taking it. don't have the energy to try to figure out if that is a realistic risk.

please forgive off topic poitnless post.

This is interesting. I have read that the amount of microbes in a probiotic is very small compared to what is normally established in your system, and that the governing factor is the amount of fiber present in your system. I don’t know if that’s true, or if it’s the complete story.

Does anyone here know those details?

@Samuel, any toothache is awful at the best of times. And your toothache sounds pretty major, and clearly, with everything else, now is not the best of times.

I hope that you have people to help you find a dentist? If not, is it something that less-sick people here might be able to help with?

I guess you have tried some of the non-soap cleansers (e.g. Sebamed, Cetaphil)?
